She was in a similar state back then, and was more or less the dark horse of the fandom. In essence, being far more popular than her sister because the fandom perceived her to be cute and adorable, especially after fics like Progress hit the scene.
Then S2 Luna happened, and all that was more or less dust.
Can't say I like the concept of yet another damned alicorn myself, but I could see the appeal from this perspective. You are indeed fortunate Hasbro did not touch her much beyond that.
